Updates and Tufts 10k recap

Hi there!

How are all of you? Unfortunately I have not been too well. I had been nursing a sore throat and raspy cough (so delightful!) for weeks, and then this Monday I just wiped out and got really sick. So I was stuck in bed with a fever that would not go away for 2 days straight – the worst! I’m finally recovered, and am eager to get back into my half marathon training, despite the fact that it has been seriously derailed. I wasn’t even able to make the Devil’s Chase this weekend for fear of slipping back into my 102.4 degree fever!

…Which brings us to updates! If you have been following this blog, you’ll know that this Columbus Day was the Tufts Health Plan 10k for Women. It was my second year running this awesome, energetic race with my lovely girlfriend.

Despite the fact that I was not feeling 100%, I enjoyed this race just as much as I did last year. Once again, it was full of awesome vendors and plenty of free samples.Vendors like City Sports and Luna Bar were there, giving out free samples and coupons alike. And as always, the race t-shirts were super cute, and came in a nice City Sports goody bag!

The route was the same as last year’s, which was just fine by me. I LOVE the route – it takes us over the Charles past one of the best views of Boston. On a bathroom break after mile 4, I managed to sneak this awesome shot:

It’s a massive, woman-centered race that is filled with energy and positivity. Rachel and I took it easy, as I was somewhat under the weather and she hadn’t been able to train much, but I actually finished the race feeling better than I had the first time I ran it, despite the fact that I was slower. I can confidently say that I finished strong, and though sometimes my frustration with being a slow runner can get the better of me, I have definitely improved in terms of endurance.

Once again, I will definitely be coming back for the Tufts 10k. This is easily my favorite race thus far, with the exception of my obstacle races! It is well organized and energetic, and runners are provided with more than enough recovery nutrition and water. A delight to participate in!

Upcoming races

Happy Tuesday!

Hope your respective weeks started out well.

I’m currently taking a break in between briefing cases and attending classes (#lawschoolproblems) to give you all a HIGHLY overdue list of my upcoming races! Seeing as how September is almost over (yikes!), here is my plan thus far for the rest of the year:

October:

  • Tufts 10k for Women – I ran this race last year (see my recap in the “Races I’ve run page”! >>>) and LOVED it. It’s an amazing, giant women-centered event that takes place in the heart of Boston. Last year, the 10k took us to some of Boston’s most iconic places, from Boston Commons down Newbury Street over the bridge and back. It was amazing, full of positive lady energy, and race swag and vendors were super swanky… Always a plus!

It’s on Columbus Day, which means that this high energy, feel-good race will be an awesome ending to a long break from classes 🙂

  • The Devil’s Chase 6.66 Miler – I love Halloween (in addition to everything autumn), and I love Salem… This race combines both of those things! I’ve never run this race before, but I know other people who have and I think it will be really fun. Participants apparently often dress up in Halloween (particularly devil) costumes, and locals chase them with pitchforks. So, yeah, it should be super awesome.

November:

  • The Fattman Cup Chilly Half Marathon – November brings with it cold weather, and this year it also means my first ever half marathon! I am excited but already super nervous. The event takes place in Newton, which is a suburb of Boston very close by. The Chilly Half is actually put on by a small, local company – Fattman Productions – who organized the Newton 10k that I participated in earlier this year (once again, see “Races I’ve Run”!). This half marathon is more budget friendly, and is definitely convenient for me – I am certainly not at a point in my life where I can spend a lot of time traveling for a race! My friend Molly is also running it (it’s her second time), so I will have a race buddy to at least save me when I look like I’m close to death.

I’d love to participate in a Turkey Trot this year, but am still deciding exactly which one I’ll sign up for. It looks like I will be home in New England for Thanksgiving, so I still need to figure out holiday logistics before I make a commitment! I’m also considering a Jingle Bell run of sorts (I loved the Somerville Jingle Bell Run last year!) but don’t know if my exam schedule will truly allow for one. Will definitely keep you posted on all that!

Feelings + race recap

Hey friends!

Super excited to say that I am DONE with my finals and, by extension, my undergraduate career. Feeling a bit weird about that. It hasn’t sunk in that I’m graduating in a week – maybe because I don’t really want to think about it. It’s honestly just strange, and I can’t really feel anything about it right now. This is highlighted by the fact that I don’t know exactly where I’ll be come fall, so I’m kind of just generally anxious.

BUT, per usual I need to get out of my own head and calm down. As you all know, I’ve already been accepted to BU Law as part of the class of 2017 , but here’s the wrinkle I maybe haven’t included: I’ve also been put on “reserve” at Cornell Law.

I really, really want to go to Cornell. I will get an update by the end of this month regarding my status: accept, deny, or further wait-listed. Knowing that I will find out any day now is killing me. I’m scared every time I open my inbox (not to mention that I check it obsessively). I even had a dream about it last night. Ugh.

But the other part of me knows that these worries come from a place of immense privilege, and that I need to stop and count my many blessings. I have to fight to remind myself to not play this game, because no one ever wins.

How do I fight this? Well, my blog, in part! This blog is representative of that desire to free myself from the (often self-imposed) shackles of my perfectionism. Peace.Sweat.Love is a mantra of sorts – hey, it works for me!

And so that’s why, to me, making a joint post about law school/future anxieties and a race recap makes sense. It’s not random – to me those things are connected. When I was running my 10k this past weekend and my Nike+ kept telling me my pace, I felt crushed that it wasn’t as fast as I wanted it to be. It was so distracting, in fact, that I almost forgot that my only job was to finish and to have fun. Why was I doing that, getting mad at myself for not running a PR? How on earth does that make sense? It’s moments like this when my old demons creep up and try to get in my head and erase everything I’ve taken so much time to (re)learn. Miles 2-4 I was in a terrible funk despite the fact that I was running this race with my loving S.O. and a dear mutual friend. Finally, mile 5 I started to get it. Or adrenaline kicked in, or I was just less grumpy because it wasn’t as hilly. We crossed the finish line together, and I had to remind myself that that was what I came for. By focusing too much on the end result, I ultimately forgot to stay present and cost myself some of the joy I could’ve gotten out of the experience.

Yeah, I definitely didn’t get a PR during this 10k like I did with my last 5k. But I think this forced me to address some important and consistent underlying fears I have. And like a lot of other people who find exercise to be a healing influence in their lives, sometimes I just have to physically tire myself out before my stubborn mind is willing to tackle my fears.

And if that doesn’t work for you, you can always laugh at how freaking ridiculous you look in your race photos next to your adorable friends and girlfriends. Look. at. my. face! LOL. Clearly I need to take myself waaaaayyy less seriously and take time to smile more often! Hopefully my induction into the Sweat Pink family will make that even easier 🙂

Exciting news!

Hello everyone!

I am currently suffering through my last ever (!!!!) undergrad finals period, so I am low on time and energy. Sorry I haven’t been posting as much! I cannot wait for this semester to be over and senior week to begin once I had in this last paper on Tuesday. Just one more to go – send me positive energy (and inspiration)!

Before it’s been too long, I did want to share an exciting bit of news I got last week. So, I don’t think I mentioned it, but I applied to be a Sweat Pink ambassador (see www.fitapproach.com if you’re interested!). Basically, Fit Approach (and the Sweat Pink ambassadors affiliated with it) is a community for individuals passionate about health, fitness, and balanced lifestyles. I figured that I would apply to be a part of the community on a whim now that I have this blog. And to my surprise… I was accepted!

I am proud to say that I am now a new Sweat Pink ambassador!

I may still be waiting for the signature pink shoelaces to come in the mail along with my Sweat Pink top, but I am excited to start posting on the Fit Approach site/checking out forums the minute I am done with finals. I’ve already filled out my profile page because I was just too excited to wait! Really, really happy that I was given the opportunity to join this community. I know that this will totally nourish me over the summer when I am training, working, and waiting to start law school (another major source of anxiety!).

More later, I have to get back to work and bang out this last paper. I ran my 10k today, so I will do a race update and post after Tuesday.

Spring in my step

Hello!

It is high time for another post. Don’t think I had forgotten!

Today in Boston it reached 70 degrees. Do you know what that means? Everyone was in full-on tanning mode, in shorts and t-shirts like it was mid-July! I’m so happy that it is finally getting nice out – it’s been a very long and harsh winter! Cheesily, I must remark that this long and harsh winter’s melting away into a late spring mirrors my own senior year. Basically, after spring break’s sunshine and acceptance into law school, I am emotionally pounds lighter than I was in the winter!

My training thus far for my upcoming 10k has been going really well – I have been consistently faster and stronger than I have been in the past! If you recall I have run a 10k before, so this will be my 2nd one. I have been doing really well during my speed workouts, and even set a new (indoor) 5k PR for myself! I can’t say exactly what my goals for this 10k are at this point in my training (besides finishing with relative ease and comfort), but I would really love to come in at under 10’00″/mile. I know that doing that with my 5k is one thing, but twice that distance is another for me. By the time the first mile or two have gone by, I’m rapidly slowing down if I’m running off a treadmill.

That said, I was able to get in the longest run I’ve been on in a while outside today with the gf because it was so gorgeous. Maybe even too gorgeous… I was so thirsty! I have a great Nathan hydration belt, but I discovered it doesn’t work very well on my body. I think those things are really meant for men and women with curveless bodies, not someone with a lot of junk in the trunk but a small waist! Luckily, my gf fit much better into the belt, and we were able to bring along much-needed hydration for our 6 miles. We felt great afterward! Running outside again is key for me, as I haven’t been able to do much of that until recently, and the uneven surfaces, dips, and inclines are something you can’t do as well on a treadmill! As I type this I’m goofily wearing compression calf sleeves under my jeans 😛

The Rec Department at my college also adorably hosted a “Spring Day” today, and there were so many cute dogs (we all know about my animal obsession… right?). They had fun little crafts and activities, so the gf and I went to say hi to friends and grab some free swag because I am like a Depression-era grandmother in my dedication to free things. Included in our swag were green Wellesley rec sunglasses, little gym towels (perfect for sweaty old me), and tons of energy bars (Luna bar, Clif, and Kind) and even a Gatorade table with free gel chews packs and drinks. More snacks are always a necessity for me – I always get hungry at work between lunch and dinner!

Speaking of food, because I am a totally obnoxious “foodie” who Instagrams pictures of her food, I need to share pictures from last night’s date here. Yes, I know I am a tool. No, I will not stop OR give you a bite! That means that I can provide you delicious pictures like the one below from last night’s date with the lady:

Spring Break recap

Hello friends –

Sadly, I am writing this from dreary, chilly Boston and not sun-soaked LA. I had an amazing spring break, and am so, so sad that it is rapidly coming to an end! These last few days will have to be spent studying and picking up where I left off with various student organizations and *ahem* the gym.

I am now officially in training for my May 10k (the Newton 10k) and am hoping to beat my time on my last 10k, which was ages ago in October (the Tufts 10k for Women). Now that I have *some* sense of where I could possibly be come autumn, I may be able to start signing up for more races and events. In addition to my 10k coming up, I’m hoping to do a Tough Mudder with my friend Tom on June 1st – 2 days after my graduation! More on that when I figure out the details.

But before I spiral out of control talking about the scary thing that is the future, let me revisit the past. Spring break was incredible, as I mentioned in my last post. We all wanted to do an official spring break-y spring break before we graduated, and this was our last chance! Our days were spent relaxing in sun drinking cocktails and our nights were spent relaxing in the hot tub with wine. It was very relaxing and also very boozy… Hey, I’m 22, OK?! 😛

I also found out that Sophia Loren and I have the same size hands – odd, because I have pretty big, muscular hands for a lady. Either way, I was pretty thrilled to step into her stiletto prints, because she is my Italian sister and a rad body image icon for me personally. She is an endlessly sultry and gorgeous fellow Italian with dark hair, light eyes, and olive-y skin with a curvy and airbrush-free body.

Women like Loren (Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, Mindy Kaling, and even Britney Spears among them!) inspire me because they have bodies, however perfect or airbrushed in various contexts, that are more relatable to me than to those of extremely thin, largely curveless and often Northern European bodies. Those bodies are also beautiful, but they are not my own. BASICALLY that was a really long way of saying that I was just as happy as I look in this photo!

I also got in plenty of snacks – don’t you worry! – during my trip. One of the most amazing things I ate? A giant banana split cookie (yes, you read that right) with chocolate chips, banana, and strawberries at the Milk Jar, a milk-and-cookies place for adults. With a side of iced coffee (served in a mason jar because LA), I was practically jumping up and down at this ecstatic temporary return to childhood.

The entire trip was incredible, but I think the best morning was by far the one I spent with the GF’s sister. We woke up early to catch a 7:30 AM hot yoga class at Modo Yoga – a celeb favorite that is mere minutes from her apartment. Man… I’ve done hot yoga before, but this was the hottest hot yoga I’ve ever done! The studio was bougie as anything, cheery and comfortable, and the actual practice room was expansive but purposefully airless. They were burning sage, which maybe made me feel like it was even hotter. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say I’d never sweat so much in my life. I regularly did hot yoga through high school, but this was next level hot. At the end of class, I collapsed into a puddle on my mat. After wiping ourselves down (yes, I was that drenched) we browsed the little showcase they had at the front of the store. She bought cute new yoga pants, I bought a sexy new water bottle for a price that took me by surprise. Oh well. It is beautiful and apparently holds 40 oz, and retains temperature like no other – the lady behind the counter claimed that ice would stay ice in it for 12+ hours. I really hope so, because lukewarm water makes me very grumpy.

After we made our purchases, we stepped over the the juice bar next door (hello, LA) to refuel post-practice. I’m recently re-inspired by juicing, so much so that I actually broke out my old juicer and starting shaking up some green drinks. I got a hearty, beet-based juice infused with lemongrass and ginger, among other things. Totally delicious and totally gorgeous.

Back here in Boston, I am ready to make some of my own juices again! I went shopping yesterday, so I am armed with kale aplenty. In fact, tonight I plan to make kale chips to accompany my dinner with the GF.

After an awesome but totally crazy spring break, I am ready to kind of lay low for a few days until the craziness of school starts up again. I’m thinking getting back to the gym and running, plenty of yoga and foam rolling. That, and lots of green tea, kale, detoxing dandelion tea, and juices. And chia seeds. Sweet, sweet chia seeds. So good when you’re feeling icky post-travel.

In that spirit, I did some hatha yoga before bed last night. I’ll share the same, gentle 25- minute video I used from yogadownload.com via youtube with you so that you can enjoy the same nurturing sequence!

Spring Breaking

Greetings from California!

So much has happened in the past week, I can’t even…

First off, our double horse show weekend went well – our home show went smoothly and we even came in third out of over a dozen teams! Pretty good for multi-tasking, right?

After the insanity of the super long weekend and 4 AM wake-up times (so early, in fact, that Dunkin Donuts was not even open 😦 ), it was work work work straight up until spring break started on the 20th… A day that is coincidentally also my birthday! This spring break, the GF, a mutual friend and I are visiting the GF’s sister and her boyfriend in LA. So we boarded our 6 AM plane (*ugh*) and went off to sunny southern California after having endured 16 degree F weather in Boston. I’m telling you, when we saw those palm trees, we swooned. I cannot tell you how nice it is to finally soak up some vitamin D! I have been in desperate need of sunshine.

Also, right after we grabbed brunch after landing at LAX, I got a call from the Boston area. The woman on the other line identified herself and said she was calling from the Boston University School of Law. She was calling to let me know… That I was accepted to the class of 2017!!! I cannot even tell you how excited I was. I’ve been rejected from a lot of the other schools or wait-listed, so this was a much-needed confidence boost. More to discuss later! For now, I am just relieved that I am in somewhere – and BU Law is a great school, too.

In the meantime, I have been enjoying some serious sunshine, brunch, and cocktails with everyone. I am an East Coast girl at heart, but I am practically ready to convert and abandon my beloved New England altogether.
