Thrifty, busy, and moving forward

Hi friends!

Sorry it’s been so long. I have, of course, been super busy. I’ve been nannying or working late at the restaurant, so I feel like I haven’t had a chance to have much “me” time to blog, relax, sip tea (and wine)… And finally today I get to after a busy weekend! Thank goodness for a free evening – I just want to go to the gym, blog, watch a little TV, and go to bed early. Because I am an old woman.

This week has also been kind of crazy because *drumroll please* I have finally sorted out law school stuff! I am very happy to say that after careful consideration, I have decided to move forward and officially become a member of Boston University School of Law’s class of 2017!

The decision makes sense for me, for a number of reasons. Staying on the waiting list was an uncertainty I couldn’t afford – I am not willing to sacrifice decent housing at a very slim set of chances. I want to start off my law school career with stability – no couch-surfing or juggling things last minute while I’m in that crucial first few weeks. Logically, BU Law makes sense. But emotionally, it also makes lots of sense. I don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere in Ithaca, and BU Law means I will be able to live with my girlfriend in an apartment in the city that many of my friends (from Wellesley and elsewhere) call home. And I am not far from my little brother and even parents!

So. obviously, this is exciting… But it also means that I have gone into full manic planning mode. And I love planning. But it is also my weakness.

But in the midst of setting up last-minute doctor’s appointments and contacting Boston realtors, I am so glad to come home to my teensy corner of the webiverse. It is so cathartic for me to write here and share the little things in my life that make me happy… And read those things that make others happy!

The past few weeks I’ve allowed myself little treats while working hard to save up for this next year. As you know, I am obsessed with bargains! Thrift is my gift 😉 *eyeroll at myself*

I signed up for the City Sports “Insider” program months ago, and it’s great because I get a little chunk of change back at the end of every period. This time around I bought myself some replacement straws for my Camelbak and some cute hairbands from Moving Comfort with the couple dollars off I got (because who likes wearing just the plain ugly elastics on their wrist? not me!).

How do you treat your self (it doesn’t have to involve retail!)?

Looks much nicer on my wrist when I'm trying to look nice but still have access to an emergency hair tie!

I also couldn’t resist a Lululemon visit when I was in the area – I just can’t help myself from checking their “We Made Too Much” section (fancy way of saying “sale”).Found a 105 F singlet discounted in this bright pink color. Fun! The sales girls told me I could buy a size larger than I normally take (I’m a 6 at Lulu and there were only 10’s and one 8 left), so I did. It’s a bit looser than I’d like, but it works just fine. It is very light and breathable – necessary for a sweatball like me :3

I was able to put my new singlet to the test recently when I embarked on my longest-ever run yet this past Saturday! I was working until late at the restaurant, and didn’t come back home until well after midnight, dead tired and sore from being on my feet for 6+ hours. I wanted to run in the morning when it was cooler, but I was just too tired! I let myself have an easy morning, a little nap, and set out for my run around 11.

So it turns out that running around noon – the hottest part of the day – is not my favorite. Don’t advise it. Nope. Especially if you sweat like an out-of-shape 45-year-old man like me. Two miles in, I had to stop in the shade for a minute and desperately chug from the little bottles of my hydration belt. This was my face:

Definitely wanted to skip this run altogether. Definitely wanted to turn around from that point and just run 4 miles. But wanted to finish what I started more. So I braved the New England humidity and hot summer sun and sweated out those 8 whole miles. At the end, I looked like I had taken a shower and then immediately put clothes on, but I was proud. My longest run ever! I took it slow and steady (especially with the heat/humidity), but still clocked in at just over 11’00” – not as bad as I thought! I’ve definitely got to give a shout out to the amazing volunteers on the East Bay bike path of Rhode Island – they had a free water station that saved me on those last two miles. I was super dehydrated despite the presence of my hydration belt – two 10 ounce bottles weren’t enough on a day like that!

Yoga, Spring, and Other things that make me happy

Hello!

Sorry I didn’t update until now, I wanted to give a weekend recap sooner buuuuuuuut got caught up in all the work  I had to do come the end of spring break 😦

That said, I’ve actually had a really great week of workouts thus far, despite the fact that I am sad that I am not on vacation and especially that I am not on vacation in sunny LA. It’s actually been pretty nice out here in Boston – I went for a run outside yesterday for the first time since my 5k! And I wore shorts!

This past Sunday I decided to go to yoga at a nearby Lululemon (once again, props to them for hosting free weekly classes!), and got more than I had expected. I go to the classes pretty regularly, and they are held in store, usually with rotating instructors. So I show up at the store this week, and they tell me that yoga is at a nearby vintage automobile museum. Damn. So I drive a couple minutes down the road, and find an “Ignite your light” -themed 1-year anniversary party for this particular store.

In the surreal, frozen world of these old cars, they had laid out tons of colorful Lululemon mats for everyone like a gorgeous patchwork quilt of yoga. After an awesome 1+ hours of yoga, the event organizers announced that each mat we were sitting on was ours to keep as a gift! That was a huge deal to me, because I have been dying for a new mat and the Lulu ones are super nice and thick, and around $65 to boot!

My toes looking pale on my brand-spanking-new complimentary fancy yoga mat!

To top it off, they also gave us cute limited addition bags from their “If nothing stood in your way” campaign with a handwritten note and a personal goals sheet. Oh, and brunch was provided… WITH MIMOSAS. I could not believe it. After this, I am honestly really hoping to get a job at Lululemon this summer/to transition over during law school. I need a side job anyways, and why not one with a crazy community with perks like these? I know their former CEO is a nut job (Oh, Chip Wilson), but a side job there sounds super tempting and less stressful than a lot of other retail/service jobs I’d be looking at. Either way, we shall see!

In the meantime, keep calm and do yoga 😉

New year, new gear

Hello!

Sorry I’ve taken a while to post again, I’ve been pretty busy with the commencement of my last first week of classes (ack!) and health educator training. It’s nice to be back at school, but it’s also absurdly terrifying.

I have both good and bad news, so I’ll end with the good news to get the bad news out of the way.

BAD NEWS: I have my first-ever injury! I know, I know. I’ve never even broken anything. I’m just not used to things going “wrong” with my body, something for which I realized I am extremely blessed. So I was totally dumbfounded when I asked my former-athletic-trainer-GF about the slight pain I had been experiencing in my left lower leg and she replied that it sounded like I had shin splints. I kid you not, I’d never actually heard of shin splints. It’s not exactly something that affects horseback riders and kids whose high school careers were spent in libraries and theaters as opposed to tennis games and track meets. But I guess with my running I am only just running into a (slight) problem – huh!  A good warning to stretch properly (something I always skimp on – I KNOW IT’S TERRIBLE I KNOW) and possibly replace my sneakers soon. I have been eyeing those leopard print Nikes after all…

My friend teased me about being shocked that I got a minor injury and laughed that I was like Rob Lowe's character on Parks and Rec, Chris Traeger. Can't say I mind the comparison!

So I’ve spent this past week taking a break from running and instead cross-training on things like the bike, elliptical, and *bleh* stairmaster. I add in that sound effect not because I hate the stairmaster exactly, but because it is so freaking hard. I’ve also been kicking my own butt doing some of the workouts from the Nike Training Club app – they are shockingly incredible and also killer! Especially upper-body focused workouts… Totally not a strong point of mine. In fact it’s my weakest point physically. But I’ll need to work on it if I want to compete in Tough Mudder!

GOOD NEWS: I ordered myself an après-Xmas present (you know, the whole “get what you really wanted” thing?) once all the holiday deals started rolling in. I managed to snag some pretty great deals from the notoriously overpriced Lululemon. One thing you must know about me is that I love nice, fancy things but I hate (and, also, can’t afford) to pay full price. Even Lululemon on sale is a biiiiiig stretch for most of the world – I recognize that! I just couldn’t resist buying myself a little belated Xmas present.

Forgive the crappy iPhone pictures- but I wanted to model the 4 new tops I got on “We Made Too Much” (Lululemon apparently refuses to let things go on “sale” or whatever, because it’s too plebeian I suppose). You can eyeroll, but this is my own blog and I will take bad selfies if I want to!

I'd been wistfully eyeing this color combo in the "Power Y tank" - and to my delight it went on sale! It's a really pretty purple stripe with a different deep purple "Baroque" pattern on the straps. It comes with built-in cups which is something I love!

This multicolored scoop neck top is extremely flattering, and the black panels down the sides make it highly slimming as well. The back is also really gorgeous - almost too pretty to wear to the gym! My only complaint is that it didn't come with removable cups. At least I had my own to throw in - no headlights for this gal!

I was least sure about this particular top, and I think I'm going to end up loving it the most. It is SO. PRETTY. The black fabric is flattering and moisture-wicking - perfect for yoga - and the pattern is delicate and totally gorgeous. It's also got a beautiful crossback and flattering ruching at the bust, as well as a rounded hem to cover your bum.

The least "cutesy" top I got will likely end up being a total workhorse. It's a bright, cheery yellow fashioned into a super lightweight singlet with an open back. Perfect for summer runs/just me being the sweatiest girl alive. Modeled with my beloved Hard Tail yoga pants (which I also never pay full price for, duh).

That’s all for now! In the meantime, wish me luck in my running recommencement next week! I hope that my annoying little shin splints will be gone by then so I can start working on beating my PR in my upcoming 5k. We’re 5 weeks out next week – so I hope so!
